Information on the Colorado Springs city budget

The city council revealed a proposed 2010 budget last week.  The city is facing a shortfall of $28.9 million, and in just a few days registered voters will be receiving ballots to vote (among other things) if the property tax rate should be increased to cover the shortfall.  For more information on 2C, you can read an explanation of how the property tax increase will work and Jeremy’s view on Issue 2C.

I like what the Gazette said about examining budget data today: “If the subject of city finances turns your crank, you’re in for a treat. If not, just remember this stuff affects you and your wallet.”

There are pages upon pages of data regarding the Colorado Springs city budget, revenue, and expenditures.  You’ll find it all on the city website, for your data-crunching enjoyment.  For a brief look at where your money goes, I put these charts together.  You can click on the image to enlarge:

View Woodmen Corridor Improvement Project in a larger map

The big Woodmen Road Corridor Improvement construction project has started to ramp up.  The project will widen Woodmen Road to six lanes from Interstate 25 to Stinson (see map above). The project is optimistically scheduled to be finished in September 2011 – originally it had been estimated to take about 2 years and 9 months, but the city and contractor are now promising it will be completed in just two years.

A colorful Labor Day weekend

Hot air balloons on the launch field at the Colorado Balloon Classic
Well, after a cancelled Saturday morning launch and a delayed Sunday morning launch, near 100 hot air balloons lifted off into the beautiful Colorado sky on Monday morning! It was really spectacular – the weather was great; you really didn’t even need a jacket.

is there really a remax hot air balloon

In case you thought it was just a marketing gimmick, yes, there really is a RE/MAX hot air balloon!  It was really fun to be on the field watching the balloon teams unwrap, spread out, inflate, and close up the balloons.  Just take one peek inside a balloon while it’s still being aired up to get a sense of just how big they are.

If you haven’t ever been to the hot air balloon festival, mark your calendars for Labor Day 2010!  We are not normally early risers, but it was worth getting up at 6 AM on a holiday to go see the balloon launch.
