December in Colorado Springs was one of the top 10 coldest on record

From the National Weather Service:

Preliminary data for Colorado Springs indicates the December 2009 average temperature was 23.3º F, which is 5.7º F below the normal December average temperature of 29º F.  This makes December 2009 the seventh coldest on record and the coldest December since 1983; the coldest December on record with an average temperature of 18.4º F.

December 2009 was certainly cold, but typically, January is the coldest month in Colorado Springs, with an average temperature of 28.1º F.  The average low temperature in January is 14.5º F, while the average high is 41.7º F – quite tolerable, really, especially with Colorado Springs low humidity!

Follow the AdAmAn’s trip up Pikes Peak

Each year, the AdAmAn Club makes a frigid trek up Pikes Peak and shoots off fireworks at midnight on December 31st – a tradition that began in 1922. Fred Barr, for whom the famous Barr Trail is named after, made the first hike up the mountain on New Year’s Eve with four other men, known as the Frozen Five.

This year, you can follow the AdAmAn Club’s progress up the peak via their Facebook fan page.  They’ve been posted updates and a few pictures of their hike.  I wonder if they’ll have cell phone service to update as they get higher up the mountain?

At the time of this post, the temp at the summit of Pikes Peak is -4.1 with a wind chill of -17.9.  Brr!

What to do with your Christmas Tree

If you read our post about where to get a fresh-cut Christmas tree a few weeks ago, then you probably need a place to dispose of it soon.

Colorado Springs and El Paso County have partnered with the El Pomar Youth Sports Foundation  to offer multiple locations for recycling your tree.  You can find a full list of treecycle locations at the city’s website.  You will need to bring a $5 donation to El Pomar, but that still beats trying to stuff the thing in your trash bin, and the money will go to a good cause.

Of course, if you’re really cheap like me, you can save $5 and get a couple dollars worth of firewood if you’re willing to cut it up yourself.  I expect to get at least a few good logs from our 13 foot tree when we take it down in a few weeks!

Three days of snow make for good sledding

It’s been snowing in Colorado Springs since Sunday and continues today. Depending on what part of the Springs you’re in, you may have gotten over a foot of snow with several more inches expected today!

School has been cancelled for nearly every district in Colorado Springs, which is relatively rare – the northern districts have a fair amount of snow days, but it takes quite a bit to cancel some of the central and southern districts.

Of course, with a fresh dumping of snow and no school, everyone’s hampering to get out and go sledding! Awhile back I did a post with popular sledding spots in Colorado Springs, and this morning I put them all (and more) on a Google map so you can see which ones are closest to you!

There are address and location locations when you click on each map pin. And, it’s open for collaboration, so if you have a spot that’s not on this list, please add it!
