Here’s what’s new in Black Forest, Colorado, as of early February 2020:

New Library Feature in Black Forest
The Pikes Peak Library District has added a library return box at Black Forest Rd. & Shoup Rd. It’s located in the parking lot of Black Forest Community Church, where the bookmobile parks on Mondays. Bookmobile staff will pick up items return to this box at their normal Black Forest stop on Mondays.
Another update! I just saw that the PPLD Bookmobile is now also making another mid-week stop near Black Forest: They’ll be at Journey K-8 School (Black Forest Rd. & Research) on Thursdays from 9-11 AM.

New Restaurant Hoping to Open in Mid-March
A new restaurant operated by the owners of the Black Forest Chew-Chew Gastro truck is going into the former Descar’s Roadhouse restaurant building on the northwest corner of Black Forest and Shoup Roads, next to the log schoolhouse. They’ve been working on extensively renovating the building for several months, and as of mid-February, they are hoping to actually open in mid-March.

When will Pineries Open Space actually open?
The Pineries Open Space seems to always be almost open. The latest I’ve heard (via the Hiking Bob podcast) is that the trails are built, but they’re waiting on the snow to melt so that they can get in and put up wayfinding signs. With the amount of snow we’re getting this year, it could be spring before it melts enough, but I really do believe that it will open in spring 2020!

Current Trail Conditions at Black Forest Section 16
Speaking of open spaces, here’s a quick update on Black Forest’s Section 16: Trail conditions are icy, icy, icy.
Section 16 gets so much traffic that any snow we get is quickly packed down, melts during the day, and freezes into ice at night. Most years, we get little enough snow that it melts away, but we’ve gotten so much this year that I can almost guarantee it will be an ice rink until May. The ice is thick right now.

Public meeting to be held about expansion of Black Forest Road
The city of Colorado Springs will be holding a public meeting regarding the widening of Black Forest Rd. between Woodmen and Old Ranch Rd. You can find out more about the meeting on its Facebook event page, and more about Black Forest Road expansion plans on the city’s website.
Northern El Paso County nature center site chosen
As we shared last year, El Paso County is planning to open a nature center in the northern part of the county, and Fox Run Regional Park was officially announced as the location of the new facility.
According to the Trails and Open Space Coalition, “After an extensive public process during the recent feasibility study, parks staff and consultants agreed that Fox Run Park has many advantages and would provide excellent educational and programmatic opportunities as well as visitor and funding potential. Black Forest Regional Park was 1st runner up.”
I admit that I’m a little bummed that Fox Run was chosen over Black Forest Regional, the Pineries, or Section 16, as it seems that a nature center will make the already super-busy Fox Run an even more popular place. It seems like they missed an opportunity to put a nature center where you could observe a forest that’s recovering from a fire (of which those other three are all part of), but they didn’t ask me. (I did go to the first meeting, though!
